Mustard is the tights colour people fear most and the one that works best. It scares because on the legs it is a yellow, and yellow shows from across the street. It works because it is a yellow warmed by brown, so it sits with almost every autumn neutral, as long as you give it an ally. In this guide we show it on Ava, our AI-generated model, in six elegant outfits, and explain piece by piece how to repeat them.

A note on Ava first: she is not a real person. She is a model created with AI to show outfits when there are no licensed photos, always with the same face, and you can find her on Instagram as @avaborromini. The pairings start from the most-saved mustard tights outfits on Pinterest.

The rule: mustard wants an ally

Mustard holds one strong colour next to it, not two. So choose a neutral that calms it and build around that:

  • Black: the sharpest contrast, the easiest place to start.
  • Navy: its complementary colour, the richest look.
  • Grey: turns it into almost a neutral, office-friendly.
  • Camel and brown: the softest, most autumnal pair.

On thickness, mustard looks best opaque, between 60 and 80 denier: the colour is full and even. Sheer, under 40 denier, the skin lightens it towards lemon yellow. The full scale is in our denier guide.

With black: the blazer dress

The simplest way to wear mustard is under black. A long blazer worn as a dress and cinched at the waist shows the leg between hem and shoe, and the tights become the only colour in the outfit. Black shoes with a pointed toe, not a round one: they lengthen the leg and keep it formal.

With camel and grey: at the café

Camel and grey are the neutrals that soften mustard. A pleated skirt below the knee, a light turtleneck and a long open coat: the mustard leg only shows when you sit or walk. The burgundy shoe is the one extra touch, and it holds because burgundy and mustard are both warm, dark colours.

With navy: velvet

Navy and mustard sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, which is why they light each other up. Velvet adds depth to the blue and makes it an evening look. With a short dress, a black Mary Jane keeps it composed; a high pump would make it party.

With brown: trench and pencil skirt

The most autumnal pairing: mustard and brown are the colours of the leaves. What matters here is that the shoes match the brown of the skirt, so the mustard leg sits between two equal blocks. The beige trench frames it. If you love brown on the legs too, the reverse pairing is in our brown tights guide.

With charcoal: the skirt suit

Mustard under an office suit is the look for anyone who wants one colour, but a decided one. Charcoal mutes it just enough. With black loafers and a small structured bag it stays daytime; with a black pump it becomes dinner.

With navy and cognac: knee-high boots

With knee-high boots, mustard shows for only a few centimetres between hem and boot. It is the most discreet way to wear it and the most practical in the cold. Cognac warms the mustard, the navy coat cools it down.

Shoes and bags: what works

  • Black shoes (pumps, loafers, Mary Janes): the safest, with everything.
  • Brown and cognac: perfect when they repeat another brown piece in the outfit.
  • Burgundy: the only colour I would add, in small doses.
  • Bags: black or brown, small and structured. A mustard bag only works if everything else is neutral.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sheer mustard: under 40 denier it turns lemon. Go opaque.
  • Two strong colours together: mustard with bright red or bright green fight each other.
  • Light shoes: beige or white cut the leg and make it look shorter.
  • Mustard with another yellow: two different yellows side by side look like a mistake, not a choice.

The photos

Every photo in this article is an AI-generated image: Ava is not a real model; Tights and the City created her to show outfits, and she is always the same. The pairings are inspired by the most-saved mustard tights outfits on Pinterest, whose creators are credited in the references. The tights under "Where to find them" are similar in colour, not the ones in the photos, which do not exist.

One ally, an opaque denier and a dark shoe: mustard asks for nothing else to become the most elegant colour of your autumn.
