The short answer: polka dot tights go with a plain outfit and a shoe in the same colour as the ground, and micro dots on a sheer ground are the easiest to wear. Polka dots are back on the runway and on celebrities, as we covered in polka dot tights for autumn/winter 2026 and in Kaia Gerber's Wolford polka dot tights. The latest example is from October: at a screening of Double Trouble at Brenden Theatres at the Palms in Las Vegas, Violet McGraw wore a black strapless mini with a velvet-look pointed bodice and a gathered skirt, with sheer polka-dot tights and pointed black heels. CelebMafia writes that the tights' "small black dots introduce a delicate pattern beneath the substantial skirt". The brand is not credited, but the formula is exactly the one below: micro dots on a sheer ground, a plain black dress, a black shoe.

How to choose: dot size and ground

The ground matters as much as the dots: on a sheer pair the skin shows between the dots and the pattern stays light; on an opaque one the dots become a full print. For the right weight, see our denier chart.

What to wear them with

  • One dot in the look. The tights are already the pattern: plain dress, skirt and jacket.
  • Black with black. Black micro-dot tights with a black dress and black pumps are the easiest pairing.
  • White dots with pale clothes. On a white or nude ground, dots go with cream, powder pink and pale blue, as on the spring/summer 2027 runway at Antonio Marras.

The shoes

Black pumps and Mary Janes for black dots; loafers for daytime; patent pumps for the evening. With tights that are sheer to the toe (a sandal toe), sandals work too.

Three outfits

  1. Office: grey shift dress, black micro-dot tights, pointed black pumps.
  2. Weekend: velvet mini, cream jumper, opaque medium-dot tights, loafers.
  3. Evening: short black dress, sheer small-dot tights, patent pumps.

What to avoid

  • Dots plus another pattern in the outfit: the look gets busy.
  • Large dots under long skirts: only a strip shows and the pattern gets lost.

Frequently asked questions

How do you wear polka dot tights?

With a plain outfit, ideally black, grey, navy or cream, and a shoe in the same colour as the tights' ground. The dots are already the pattern of the look.

Small or large polka dot tights?

Small dots, or micro dots, on a sheer ground read as a texture from a distance and are the easiest, even at the office. Large dots are more graphic and playful, best with a simple short dress.

What shoes go with polka dot tights?

Black pumps and Mary Janes with black dots on a sheer ground; loafers for daytime; for the evening, patent pumps, or sandals if the tights are sheer to the toe.

Are polka dot tights in style?

Yes: we saw them in autumn/winter 2026 and on the spring/summer 2027 runways, from Antonio Marras's polka dot knee-highs to a white dotted pair at Jean Paul Gaultier.
