White tights are this season's unexpected micro-trend: where they come from and how to wear them
After years of red, white tights are back: from Copenhagen and Jil Sander to the spring/summer 2027 street style. Where they come from, which denier, which shoes and which mistakes to avoid.
For a couple of years the statement tight was red. This season the leg that stands out is white: not nude, not cream under a wedding dress, but a real white, opaque or in lace, worn with a black coat and a pointed shoe. It is a micro-trend, not the new black, and that is what makes it interesting: easy to try, quick to read, and with a clear story behind it on the runways.
Here is where it comes from, where we have seen it so far and, above all, how to wear it without looking like a school photo.
Where the trend comes from
Fashion editors noticed it first. In March, Who What Wear's Audry Hiaoui wrote that after a couple of years in which "red tights were everywhere", with pink and purple following, the micro-trend she kept seeing more than any other, "from the February runway shows to celebrities to fashion editors", was white tights. She first noticed them at Copenhagen Fashion Week, in the autumn/winter 2026 shows of Caro Editions and Baum und Pferdgarten, then on Hunter Schafer at a Grammys after-party and on editors in the street style photos of February's fashion month. She also notes that a few people were already wearing them at New York Fashion Week the previous September.
Grazia tells the same story: red was the standout shade in recent years, white started gaining momentum last season, and at Caro Editions the runway went further, with white polka dot tights.
In Milan the strongest image came from Jil Sander. For autumn/winter 2026 Simone Bellotti split skirts open along their seams to show a thigh wrapped in white instead of skin, and slid stirrup leggings into patent pumps. We told the whole story in our piece on Jil Sander's white stockings: within days, the same gesture had surfaced at Tod's and Gucci too.
There is also a colour in the air. Pantone's Colour of the Year 2026 is a white, PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer, which the institute describes as "a billowy white imbued with a feeling of serenity". It does not create a hosiery trend on its own, but it explains why so much white is reaching shop windows this autumn.
The latest sighting comes from a photo shoot. In her October 2026 shoot for WWD Weekend, photographed by Sam Nixon, Amanda Seyfried sits on a folding chair against dark stage curtains, wrapped in an enormous brown fur-look coat, with "white opaque tights, black cat-eye sunglasses and pointed slingback heels with contrasting panels", as CelebMafia describes it. No brand is credited for the tights. It is a useful image all the same: opaque white with brown and black, far from the schoolgirl look, is exactly the grown-up version of the trend.
White on the spring/summer 2027 runways
The white leg did not disappear with the autumn collections. In the spring/summer 2027 shows we went through look by look, it came back in lighter, more playful forms:
- Reverie by Caroline Hu, Paris: sheer white tights scattered with small black ants, with sheer ballet flats. It is the most literal white leg of the season (the look-by-look).
- Mame Kurogouchi, Paris: the white school-uniform sock with dark shoes, and a white openwork knee-high with navy brogues (the look-by-look).
- Comme des Garçons, Paris: a short white sock with white shoes under the polka dot dresses, in 5 of 23 looks (the look-by-look).
None of these is a classic opaque white tight, but they all point the same way: white at the bottom of the figure, as a point of light.
On the streets: lace, polka dots, opaque
Street style is where the trend became wearable. In Copenhagen, in August, white lace tights appeared outside the shows with simple, light outfits.
At the same fashion week the white went sheer, with polka dots, and even open at the toe, with white leather thong sandals: a summer version of the trend.
In Milan, in September, the white leg was back outside Jil Sander, this time in the most graphic version: opaque white tights, black leather shoes, a long black coat.
And outside Ermanno Scervino, a few days later, the total white: a cream faux-fur coat over a white lace top and mini skirt, white lace tights and beige pointed heels.
Those four photos sum up the three ways in: lace, playful sheers, graphic opaque.
Which white tights to choose
Opaque, for a solid white. White is the colour where denier matters most. At low denier the knit lets the skin show through and the white turns creamy, pinkish or greyish depending on your skin tone. For a full, even white, start at about 50 to 60 denier: above the 40 denier at which tights count as opaque, because white needs a denser knit than black to hide the skin. Wolford's Merino Tights in ecrue, half polyamide and half virgin wool, are the winter version: warmer and a little softer in tone than optical white.
Lace, net and pointelle, for an easier start. Patterned whites forgive more, because the eye reads the design before the colour. Swedish Stockings makes several in ivory this season: the Laci Tights designed with Baum und Pferdgarten, with a rose lace pattern and the Danish label's BP logo, knitted from regenerated ECONYL polyamide and made in Italy; the Lykke net tights; and the Ina, with a chevron pointelle. For the general rules on lace, see our guide on how to wear lace tights.

The right size. A white knit stretched too tight goes transparent over the knee and thigh. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one, as our tights size chart explains: the white stays more even and the pair lasts longer.
How to wear them: three outfits
1. With black (the most graphic). White tights, a short black dress or skirt, a black coat and black pumps or loafers. It is the Jil Sander formula seen outside the show in Milan: the contrast is so clean it looks deliberate, not costume-like.
2. Tone on tone (the softest). White or ivory tights with cream, beige or grey: a camel coat, an ecru knit, nude or beige shoes. The leg becomes one long line with the shoe, as in the total-white look outside Ermanno Scervino.
3. With tailoring (the most grown-up). A blazer worn as a dress or over a short skirt, white lace tights and a fine strappy sandal or a pointed pump. It is the image in the Swedish Stockings campaign at the top of this page.

Mistakes to avoid
- Everything sweet at once. White tights, a pastel dress, ruffles and round-toe flats add up to a school photo. Keep at least one sharp element: a black coat, a pointed shoe, leather.
- A low denier in daylight. An opaque white looks deliberate; a 20 denier white looks like a mistake. Save the sheer whites for patterned or polka dot styles, as in Copenhagen.
- A shoe that cuts the leg. A shoe in a strong colour, red or cobalt, breaks the line at the ankle. With white, pick black for contrast or a shoe close to the tights for continuity.
- Washing them with dark clothes. White picks up colour easily. Wash them separately, cold and in a mesh bag, as we explain in our guide on how to wash tights.
The bottom line
White tights are not for everyone, and they do not need to be: they are a micro-trend, a small, cheap way to make a black coat or a short dress look new. Start with lace or pointelle if opaque white feels like too much, keep the rest of the look adult and sharp, and pair them with black or with cream. If you still prefer a classic, the alternative is in our guide to what colour tights to wear with a black dress.
Frequently asked questions
Are white tights in style in 2026?
Yes, as a micro-trend rather than a new basic. White tights showed up on the autumn/winter 2026 runways in Copenhagen (Caro Editions, Baum und Pferdgarten) and Milan (Jil Sander), and again in the spring/summer 2027 street style in Copenhagen and Milan.
What shoes go with white tights?
Black shoes are the most graphic choice: pumps, loafers, Mary Janes. For a softer look, choose shoes in white, cream or a pale nude, so the leg reads as one long line. Avoid shoes in a strong contrasting colour if you want the leg to look longer.
What denier should white tights be?
For a clean, solid white, go opaque, from about 50 to 60 denier up: at low denier white becomes transparent, takes on the colour of your skin and looks greyish or creamy. Lace, net and pointelle are the exception, because the pattern does the work.
How do you wear white tights without looking childish?
Pair them with grown-up pieces: a black coat, a tailored blazer, a leather skirt, a pointed shoe. Avoid combining them with pastel colours, ruffles and flat round-toe shoes all at once.
