Can you wear tights with sandals and open-toe shoes? How to do it right

Yes, with the right pair: toeless or sandal-toe tights, very sheer, nude or black. How to choose them, which sandals work, when to skip them, with examples from the spring/summer 2027 runways.

The short answer: yes, you can wear tights with sandals and open-toe shoes, as long as the toe doesn't give you away. That means a pair made for it, toeless or with a sandal toe, very sheer, in nude matched to your skin or in black. The rule that "tights and sandals don't mix" was really about a reinforced toe showing through the front of the shoe. Take that away and the pairing works, and the spring/summer 2027 runways wore it over and over.

Toeless or sandal toe: the two solutions

There are two ways to hide the toe, and they are not the same thing.

  • Sandal toe (or invisible toe): ordinary tights whose toe is knitted in the same sheer yarn as the leg, with no thicker band. The foot is covered, but in an open shoe you see a sheer foot, not a seam. Our glossary explains it in detail, and our anatomy of tights shows where the reinforcement normally sits.
  • Toeless (or open toe): tights that stop before the toes. A thin loop around the big toe, or a band across the front of the foot, holds them in place. In the sandal the toes are bare, with the nail polish on show.

Which one to choose? With a peep-toe that shows only the tip of the foot, a sandal toe is enough. With a sandal that has thin straps, or a thong sandal, toeless looks cleaner: the toes look bare and the hosiery seems to vanish.

The right denier: as sheer as possible

The sheerer the leg, the more natural the bare foot looks next to it. The toeless styles we found from three major brands are all ultra-sheer:

TightsDenierToePrice at the time of writing
Calzedonia Open Toe Sheer Tights8, matteToeless, band across the toes£15.99 / €10.95

Falke Shelina Toeless12, shimmeringToeless, loop around the big toe€16 (falke.com, Belgium)
Calzedonia Matt Totally Invisible20, matteSandal toe (invisible)£19.99 / €15.95

Up to about 15 denier the leg still reads as skin. A 20 denier with a sandal toe, like Calzedonia's Totally Invisible, is the autumn option: more coverage, still nothing showing at the toe. Above that, opaque tights with an open shoe stop looking like a trick and start looking like a choice, which is the runway territory below. For the whole denier scale, see our guide to denier.

Falke describes the Shelina Toeless as "the ideal toeless summer tights for every skin type", "ideal with sandals and open shoes". Wolford says the Luxury 9 Toeless are "perfect for wearing with sandals and peep-toe shoes", with a toe loop that "leaves the front part of the foot uncovered".

Nude or black?

Nude is invisible tights. It only works if the shade matches your skin: too light and the leg looks grey, too dark and it looks orange. Toeless styles come in several shades: Falke lists six on its site, Calzedonia's open toe comes in Nude 4 Natural and Nude 7 Bronze, Wolford's in Gobi and Sand. It's the choice for weddings, the office in summer and anywhere bare legs aren't welcome. For the effect, see our guide to make-up effect tights.

Black is a look, not a trick. Sheer black with a black sandal makes one line from the leg to the shoe, and the foot shows through the hosiery. With black, a sandal toe is often enough, because the sheer black foot is part of the effect.

Which sandals work

  • Strappy heeled sandals: the easiest. The straps break up the foot and the tights look intentional.
  • Thong sandals: only with toeless tights that have a big-toe loop, or with sheer black worn as a statement (see Elisabetta Franchi below).
  • Peep-toes and slingbacks with an open toe: a sandal toe is enough, since only the tip of the foot shows.
  • Slides and flat beach sandals: the hardest. Tights with a flat summer sandal look like a mistake rather than a choice.

How the runways wore it

The spring/summer 2027 shows went further than the toeless trick: they showed the hosiery on purpose.

At Elisabetta Franchi, in Milan, sheer black hosiery comes down over the foot and goes straight into a black thong sandal, with the strap over the hosiery, under a leather bomber and under a black bodysuit with long gloves.

At Dolce&Gabbana, as Life&People put it, "jewelled sandals coexist with black voile socks": a sheer black sock at the ankle or knee, inside an open, jewelled shoe, in around thirty of 81 looks. Our look-by-look has them all.

Fendi did the same with knee socks: sheer black or fishnet up to the knee, with a sandal, under silk boxers and slips (our review).

In Paris, Loewe put a sheer black knee-high inside a thong sandal hung with charms, with the toe post over the stocking (the look-by-look).

And at De Pino the nude version: a nude stocking and a nude knee-high, always with nude peep-toe pumps, so the sheer toe is part of the look (our review).

When not to

  • With a reinforced toe. The visible band at the toe is the one thing that really doesn't work.
  • With flat beach sandals and summer clothes. Too far apart in register.
  • In real heat. If it's hot enough for bare legs, go bare legs.
  • With a nude that doesn't match your skin. Better sheer black, or nothing.
  • With chipped nail polish in toeless tights. The toes are the only bare part: they are on show.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear tights with sandals?

Yes, as long as the toe doesn't give you away: choose toeless tights, which leave the toes bare, or a sandal toe with no reinforced band, in a very sheer denier. Nude or black, never with a reinforced toe.

What are toeless tights?

Tights that stop before the toes and stay in place with a thin loop around the big toe or across the front of the foot. In a sandal the toes are bare and the leg is covered.

What denier should tights be for open-toe shoes?

As sheer as possible: toeless styles from Calzedonia, Wolford and Falke are 8, 9 and 12 denier. Up to about 15 denier the leg still reads as skin; a 20 denier with a sandal toe works in autumn.

Nude or black tights with sandals?

Nude, matched to your skin, disappears and suits weddings, the office and summer. Black is a deliberate look: on the spring/summer 2027 runways it came with black sandals, jewelled or thong styles.
