How to wear grey tights: shades, shoes and outfits

Light grey, smoke, charcoal and melange: which grey to choose, the denier, the colours and shoes that work, and the outfits we saw at Jil Sander, in Rome and in street style.

Black tights disappear; grey ones don't. A grey leg is visible, but it doesn't shout like colour does: it is the neutral that sits between black and nude, softer than the first and more deliberate than the second. This season it is everywhere, from the Milan runways to the red carpet, and it is easier to wear than it looks. Here is which grey to choose, how heavy, with which colours and shoes, and the mistakes to avoid.

Why grey, and why now

The clearest signal came from Milan. At Jil Sander's spring/summer 2027 show, Simone Bellotti put opaque tights on 17 of the 63 looks, and in 9 of them the colour was grey, usually with a pointed pump in a matching shade. At Anteprima the grey became a sheer ribbed knee-high, worn with Mary Janes.

Street style had got there first. During New York Fashion Week in February, guests wore grey opaque tights under charcoal coats, and in Paris in October a dark grey coat went over a black dress and light grey tights. On the red carpet, Benedetta Porcaroli chose smoke-grey tights with a black blazer and black pumps at the Rome Film Festival.

Which grey: four shades

  • Light grey. Pale, almost silver. It is the most fashion-forward: it lightens the leg and works with cream, white, pastels and light blue, as in Jil Sander's look 41 with a pale shirt and a cream skirt, the house that a season earlier had built a show on white stockings and stirrups. It is the hardest to wear with black (for a black dress, see what colour tights to wear with it), because the contrast becomes graphic.
  • Smoke grey. A grey with a hint of brown or blue, usually sheer: the leg shows through as a shadow. It is the most versatile, and the natural replacement for sheer black in the evening. Calzedonia calls it Smokey Grey.
  • Charcoal or anthracite. The darkest grey, close to black but softer. It suits tailoring, black, navy and wool coats, and it is the easiest step for anyone who always wears black. Wolford calls it anthracite.
  • Melange. A heathered grey, with fibres of different tones, like a sweatshirt or a knit. It looks casual and warm, and it is made for knitwear, flannel and boots. Calzedonia sells it as Grey Blend.

Sheer or opaque: the denier

The weight changes the grey more than with any other colour. In opaques, from 50 denier up, the colour is solid and reads as grey from a distance: right for daytime, the office, knitwear and coats. In sheers, from 15 to 30 denier, the skin shows through and the grey turns smoky, closer to a shadow: right for the evening and for black. Our denier guide explains the scale step by step. For cold days, a wool or merino grey adds warmth without adding thickness, as the thermal tights guide explains; the fibres themselves are in what tights are made of.

The colours that work

  • Grey on grey. The most elegant option: a grey coat, a grey skirt or knit, and grey tights in a slightly different shade. Elsa Hosk did it in New York with a charcoal coat and grey opaque tights; outside Altuzarra a guest wore a charcoal coat and skirt with grey tights and white shoes.

  • Black. Grey under black softens an all-black look without breaking it: the leg still connects to the dress. Light grey under black is more graphic, smoke grey more discreet.
  • Camel, beige and brown. Warm neutrals and grey get on well: Jil Sander showed grey under a beige trench. Brown shoes or a brown bag keep the look soft. If you like warmer tones, our guide to brown tights works on the same idea.
  • Pastels. Pale pink, light blue, cream: light grey makes them more grown-up. At Jil Sander a pale grey went under a pink mini dress.
  • One bright colour. Grey is a perfect base for a single strong note: cobalt, red, green. Charcoal tights with cobalt pumps, as in Jil Sander's look 29, are the boldest version. For colour on the legs instead, see the colours to wear instead of black.

The shoes

  • The same grey. A pump or flat in the same shade as the tights lengthens the leg into a single line: it is the Jil Sander trick, and it works best with light grey.
  • Black. Pointed black pumps, as Porcaroli wore them, make grey look sharper and more evening.
  • Brown and tan. They warm up grey and suit daytime, loafers, boots and knitwear.
  • White or silver. With light grey, for a cool, wintry palette.
  • Colour. One bright shoe, cobalt or red, on charcoal tights: the leg becomes the background.

Four outfits

  1. Office. Charcoal or melange opaque tights, a grey flannel skirt, a knit in the same tone, black or brown loafers.
  2. Evening. Smoke-grey sheer tights, a black mini or slip dress, pointed black pumps: the Porcaroli formula.
  3. Weekend. Melange opaque tights, a short knit dress or a denim skirt, ankle boots, an oversized coat.
  4. Fashion week. Light grey opaque tights, a cream or pale pink mini, a pump in the same grey, a long beige coat: the Jil Sander look.

Knee-highs and socks

Grey doesn't have to go up to the waist. At Anteprima the grey was a sheer ribbed knee-high under shorts, with Mary Janes: a lighter, more playful way to bring grey into a summer or mid-season look.

The mistakes to avoid

  • The wrong grey with black. A very light, shiny grey under a black dress can look like a school uniform. With black, choose smoke grey or charcoal, matte.
  • Too many greys that don't talk to each other. Grey on grey works when the shades are close or clearly different; two greys that almost match look like a mistake. Keep one warm and one cool apart.
  • Shine. Glossy grey tights look silver and dated. Unless you want that effect, choose matte.
  • A shoe lighter than the tights in the evening. With a dark grey, a white shoe cuts the leg at the ankle; keep it for light grey.
  • Sheer grey without trying it on. On some skin tones a sheer smoke grey can look ashy: check it in daylight, or go up to an opaque.

Where to find them

The box below lists pairs we chose ourselves, all marked "similar": Calzedonia's Matt Soft Comfort 50 in grey and in grey melange, its Essential 20 in smoke grey for a sheer version, and Wolford's Merino Tights in anthracite, a wool blend for the cold.

Frequently asked questions

What goes with grey tights?

Black, white, camel, navy and pastels like pale pink or light blue. Grey is a neutral, so it works with almost everything; it is most striking tone on tone, with a grey coat or skirt, or against a single bright colour such as cobalt.

What shoes to wear with grey tights?

A shoe in the same grey lengthens the leg, as on the Jil Sander runway; black pumps make the look graphic; brown or tan softens it for daytime; white or silver suits a light grey.

Are grey tights in fashion in 2026?

Yes. At Jil Sander's spring/summer 2027 show, 9 of the 17 looks with tights were in opaque grey, and in street style from New York to Paris grey tights appeared with charcoal coats and black dresses. On the red carpet, Benedetta Porcaroli wore smoke-grey tights at the Rome Film Festival.

Sheer or opaque grey tights?

Opaque, 50 denier and up, for a solid, daytime grey with knitwear and coats; sheer, 15 to 30 denier, for a smoky grey that works in the evening with black.
