Helen Mirren's black tights: from the A Talent for Murder premiere to the looks that explain it best
At the A Talent for Murder premiere the sheer black barely showed. From Hitchcock to TIFF 2017, five nights when Helen Mirren wore black tights in full view.

Black from shoulder to shoe, and nearly all of it covered. At the New York premiere of A Talent for Murder on 21 October, Helen Mirren wore a tulle skirt that fell to the ankle, leaving only a few centimetres of leg in view between the hem and the tips of her pumps, covered in sheer black. It's a tiny detail, and for anyone who knows her archive, not a surprising one.
For more than a decade, when a dress stops at the knee or the calf, Mirren has often reached for black tights, even under white. Here is the New York premiere and five nights when the tights show clearly, then what is credited, why it works and how to copy it.
A Talent for Murder, New York 2026: Matières Fécales and a veil at the ankle
The premiere was held at the AMC Lincoln Square Theater, according to the Getty Images captions. The film is directed by Anton Corbijn and adapted from Joanna Murray-Smith's play Switzerland; Mirren plays Patricia Highsmith, alongside Alden Ehrenreich and Olivia Cooke, according to FilmNation.
The look, top to bottom, according to Red Carpet Fashion Awards and The Fashionista Stories: a black long-sleeved ribbed top, worn in place of the runway's jacket; Matières Fécales' Fall 2026 "pleated tulle, drop-waist corseted skirt", already worn by Sarah Paulson and Claire Foy; Margot McKinney Australian South Sea pearls (necklace, earrings, ring); Tyler Ellis's Winnie bag; black pointed pumps, brand not given. Hello! calls the skirt a Black Swan-style tutu. The stylist is Lee Harris.
No source mentions the hosiery. In the full-length photos her ankles are in sheer black, with skin showing on the top of the foot: we'd put it around 10 to 20 denier. The skirt hides the rest, so it's impossible to tell whether these were tights or shorter hosiery.
Hitchcock, Los Angeles 2012: black lace and gold brocade
On 20 November 2012 Mirren attended the Los Angeles premiere of Hitchcock at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills (Getty caption). Hello! described her in "a black lace dress with a gold brocade trim"; no designer is named.
From the photo: long lace sleeves, gold embroidery at the neck, cuffs, waist and hem, and a pencil skirt below the knee. Underneath, sheer black tights: skin shows through on the shin, with the knee slightly darker. On her feet, black pumps with an ornament on the toe. Tights brand not credited.
Hitchcock, London 2012: black cape, florals and ankle boots
Three weeks later, on 9 December 2012, came the UK premiere of the same film at BFI Southbank (Getty caption). We found no source describing or crediting the look for this night: what follows is our reading of the photo.
A short black cape over the shoulders, on top of a black dress with green and white flowers that ends just below the knee. Black tights more opaque than in Los Angeles, with the knees only slightly lighter: somewhere between 30 and 40 denier, by eye. On her feet, embellished black ankle boots with a slim heel. The tights bridge the hem and the boot, so the whole leg stays dark.
American Cinematheque Award, Beverly Hills 2013: black lace, sheer black
On 12 December 2013 Mirren was at the Beverly Hilton for the 27th American Cinematheque Award, honouring Jerry Bruckheimer (Getty caption). Again, no fashion source described the look; we read it from the photo.
A long-sleeved black lace dress with a rounded neckline, fitted to mid-calf. Underneath, sheer black tights in the same tone as the lace, clearly see-through on the shin: around 15 to 20 denier, we'd say. Low-cut black pumps. It's the cleanest version of the formula: one black, three levels of transparency (lace, sheer, skin).
GREAT British Film Reception, Los Angeles 2014: white dress, black tights
On 28 February 2014 Mirren attended the reception for the British nominees of the 86th Academy Awards, at the British Consul General's residence in Los Angeles (Getty caption). No source we found names the labels.
From the photo: a white dress with three-quarter sleeves, a small keyhole at the neckline and a straight skirt to the knee. Underneath, semi-opaque black tights, with skin only just showing at the knee, and black pumps. It's the sharpest contrast of the series: white above, black below, nothing in between.
The Leisure Seeker, Toronto 2017: aubergine Dolce & Gabbana
On 9 September 2017 Mirren presented The Leisure Seeker at the Toronto International Film Festival, at Roy Thomson Hall (Getty caption). According to MyLittleBird, she wore a fitted Dolce & Gabbana aubergine knit dress with a flouncy hem, "with black tights instead of more predictable pale hose".
From the photo: black lace appliqués on the shoulders and the flounce, and black tights between the hem and black ankle boots embellished at the toe. The flounce covers most of the leg, but the black at the ankle ties the dress to the shoe. Tights brand not credited.
The tights: what we know and what we don't
On none of these six nights was the tights brand credited: not by the fashion sources we read, not by the Getty captions. The only source that mentions them at all is MyLittleBird for TIFF 2017, and only to say they were black.
Everything else comes from the photos and is our reading:
- Colour: always black. Never nude, never colour, never a visible pattern.
- Density: sheer (about 10 to 20 denier) with lace and the dressiest evenings, in Los Angeles in 2012, in 2013 and in 2026; more opaque (about 30 to 40 denier) with daywear and with white, in London in 2012 and in 2014.
- Finish: matte, with no obvious shine or seams.
- Shoes: always black, pumps or ankle boots, so leg and foot stay one colour.
For one night this autumn, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival gala on 24 October, WWD reported that stylist Lee Harris had her wear black nylon tights under a pink Martin Grant dress. In the Getty photos we saw, though, the ankle between the hem and her pink Bottega Veneta mules doesn't look black, so that night isn't among the looks here.
Why it works: black as a line, not an accessory
Mirren wears dresses that stop at the knee or lower, almost always with long sleeves. With those proportions there isn't much leg on show, and a bare ankle or shin becomes the clearest break in the look. Black tights remove it: they connect the hem to the black shoe and draw the line downwards.
It works with white too, which is the hardest case. In 2014, black under a white dress might have looked like a broken rule. Instead it ties the dress to the black shoes and makes it look wintry rather than ceremonial. Sheer black is having a moment right now: Elizabeth Debicki and Emmy Rossum have worn it on the red carpet, and Saint Laurent and Prada have sent it down the runway. Mirren never stopped.
How to wear it
- Sheer with lace and for evening, 10 to 20 denier. Lace is already a transparency: sheer tights continue it, opaques flatten it. The full scale is in our denier guide.
- Semi-opaque for day and with white, 30 to 40 denier. Too sheer under white looks grey; 30 to 40 stays solidly black without becoming a block.
- Black shoes, always. Pumps or ankle boots, but in the same black as the tights: the leg ends at the toe, not the ankle.
- Knee or calf-length hems. That's where black tights do the most. With a very short dress the effect is different, more graphic.
- Matte, not shiny. Lace, brocade and satin already catch the light: the tights shouldn't add more.
- One piece that talks. The brocade, the flounce, the tulle skirt. The tights support it. Same logic as our guide to what colour tights to wear with a black dress.
Mistakes to avoid
- Nude with black shoes. It cuts the leg off at the ankle: exactly the effect Mirren avoids.
- Ultra-sheer under a white dress. Below 15 denier, black against white turns grey and the skin looks patchy.
- Shiny tights under lace. Two surfaces reflecting differently, one on top of the other: the lace loses definition.
Six nights over fourteen years, the same idea: when the dress stops below the knee, Helen Mirren finishes the look in black, and the sheer black that barely showed at the ankle in New York is the signature running through all of them.

Frequently asked questions
What tights did Helen Mirren wear to the A Talent for Murder premiere?
At the New York premiere on 21 October 2026, Helen Mirren's ankles were in sheer black under her Matières Fécales tulle skirt. No source names the brand, and the skirt covers the rest of the leg, so the photos can't show whether they were tights or shorter hosiery.
Does Helen Mirren often wear black tights?
Yes. Getty photos show her in sheer or semi-opaque black tights at the Hitchcock premieres in Los Angeles and London in 2012, the American Cinematheque Award in 2013, the GREAT British Film Reception in 2014 and The Leisure Seeker premiere at TIFF 2017. The tights brand was not credited on any of these occasions.
Which denier should I choose to copy Helen Mirren's looks?
For the sheer evening look, 10 to 20 denier. For daywear and white or pale dresses, a semi-opaque 30 to 40 denier, as in the photos from the 2014 reception and the London Hitchcock premiere. These are our readings of the photos, not credited figures.
