What tights to wear with ankle boots: denier, colour and the right boot for every skirt
Sheer or opaque, matching or contrasting: how to choose tights for heeled, chunky and slouchy ankle boots, with which skirts, and the mistakes that cut the leg in half.
The ankle boot is the shoe of autumn, and it is also the one that changes most from pair to pair. As Who What Wear put it in October, there is "no shortage of relevant ankle-boot styles in 2026": "the top can be wide, fitted, or stocking-like", the toe "pointy, square, round, or somewhere in between". That is why there is no single right pair of tights for ankle boots. There is a right pair for each boot, and a few rules that work for all of them.
The first rule: colour decides the line
Between the hem of the skirt and the top of the boot there is a stretch of leg, and the tights decide how it reads.
- Same colour as the boot. Black tights in black boots, brown in brown: tights and boot become a single line, and the leg looks longer. It's the safest choice, and the best one with a short skirt.
- Dark on dark. Black tights with dark brown or burgundy boots still read as one block, because the contrast is low.
- Deliberate contrast. A strong colour against a black boot (cobalt, red, purple) works when the skirt is plain and the colour isn't fighting anything else. Our guide to coloured tights instead of black has the shades of the season.
The same rule works in brown. In Milan this September, Heart Evangelista wore sheer brown tights with slouchy dark brown leather ankle boots with a heel: two shades of the same colour, with the skin showing through the sheer.
The runways pushed matching to the limit. At Telfar's spring/summer 2027 show, in look 20, camel leopard tights run straight into ankle boots in the same print, so the leg and the boot are one surface. Our Telfar look-by-look has the photos.
Which denier for which boot
The boot sets the weight, and the tights should follow it.
| Ankle boot | Tights | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Slim, heeled, pointed | Sheer 15–20 or opaque 40–60 | A fine boot takes both; sheer is dressier |
| Chelsea, flat or low heel | Opaque 50–80 | A sturdier boot wants a sturdier leg |
| Chunky, lug sole, combat | Opaque 60 and up, wool or cashmere | A sheer leg looks too thin above a heavy sole |
| Slouchy, soft shaft | Sheer or semi-opaque | The folds of the shaft need a light leg |
| Sock boot, stocking-like shaft | Same colour as the boot | The boot should look like a continuation of the tights |
The denier scale is explained in our guide to denier. For the heavy end, a blend with natural fibres is warmer and less shiny. Calzedonia's Matt Opaque Tights with Cashmere and Modal, for example, are "super opaque", made of 60% modal, 29% polyamide, 8% cashmere and 3% elastane, at £19.99 in the UK (€16.95 in Italy), in black, brown, grey and other colours.

Sheer tights are not banned with boots. Outside the Zankov show in New York, a guest wore sheer black tights with black suede lace-up stiletto ankle boots: the boot is slim and high-heeled, so the sheer leg stays in proportion.
Which skirt length
- Mini skirt. The most leg on show, so colour matters most. Matching tights and boots give the longest line. Outside Akris in Paris this October, a guest wore a printed mini skirt and jacket with black tights and dark brown pointed ankle boots: dark on dark, with no break.
- Knee-length. The easiest balance: a short stretch of tights, any denier.
- Midi. The skirt meets the boot or almost, so only a strip of leg shows. Opaque tights avoid a cold gap and keep the look clean.
- Shorts. Ankle boots and opaque tights are one of the classic shorts outfits; see our guide on how to wear shorts with tights.
Socks over tights
A short sock that peeks out of the boot, worn over the tights, is one of the strongest ideas of the spring/summer 2027 shows. At Sacai, Chitose Abe put a black sock above a pointed black ankle boot in 27 of 45 looks. Off the runway, the easiest version is tonal: black tights, a black ribbed sock folded once over the top of the boot. A sock in a different texture (wool over sheer, lace over opaque) adds interest without adding colour.
How to make them last inside boots
Ankle boots are hard on tights. Our guide on how to stop tights laddering explains why: a sheer pair inside an ankle boot ladders right on the edge of the shaft, and zips catch the knit.
- Close the zip with the tights pulled away, one hand between zip and leg.
- Check the inside of the boot for hard seams or a worn lining, which rub at every step.
- Choose a reinforced sole for flat boots. Oroblù designed its Wave (40 denier) and Spirit (30 denier) tights for trainers and ankle boots, with a tougher knit where the foot rubs inside the shoe. More in our article on Oroblù's bio-derived tights.
- Go up in denier for everyday wear. An opaque 50 lasts much longer than a 15 in a boot you walk in all day.
When it gets really cold
Ankle boots leave the whole calf exposed, so in December the tights do most of the work. Three ways to stay warm without changing the look:
- Wool and cashmere blends in opaque weights: matte, warm, and they suit leather and suede boots.
- Thermal tights, brushed on the inside: from the outside they look like ordinary opaques, and some versions even look sheer. Our guide to thermal tights compares them.
- A knee sock over the tights, hidden under a midi skirt or peeking out of the boot: an extra layer exactly where the boot stops.
The mistakes to avoid
- A light leg in a heavy boot. Nude sheer above a lug sole makes the leg look thin and the boot enormous.
- The shaft that cuts the leg. A light tight with a dark boot, under a midi skirt, leaves a pale band that cuts the leg in half. Match the colour or close the gap.
- Wrinkles at the ankle. Tights that are too long bunch above the boot. Our tights size chart helps you choose the right size.
- Shine against matte leather. Very shiny tights with a matte suede boot look like two different outfits. Matte with matte, satin with patent.
- Too many colours. Coloured tights, a coloured boot and a printed skirt compete. Pick one star.
Three outfits to copy
- Office: grey wool mini skirt, black roll-neck, opaque black tights, black pointed ankle boots with a kitten heel.
- Weekend: short black skirt, beige sweater, opaque brown tights, chunky black Chelsea boots.
- Evening: black slip dress, sheer black 15 denier, black suede stiletto ankle boots.

Frequently asked questions
What colour tights should I wear with black ankle boots?
Black is the safest: tights and boot become one line and the leg looks longer. Dark colours such as brown, burgundy or navy also work; a strong colour like cobalt or red works if it's deliberate, under a plain skirt.
Sheer or opaque tights with ankle boots?
It depends on the boot. A slim, heeled, pointed ankle boot takes both a 15–20 denier sheer and a 40–60 denier opaque. A chunky boot with a lug sole or a Chelsea boot wants opaque tights, 60 denier and up, or wool and cashmere blends.
Do tights ladder inside ankle boots?
Sheer ones can, on the edge of the shaft and on zips, because the boot rubs at the same point at every step. Check the inside of the boot, close the zip with the tights pulled away, and in daily use choose a higher denier or a pair with a reinforced sole.
Should tights match ankle boots?
Matching colour gives the longest line, and it's the easiest choice with short skirts. Contrast works when both are dark, like black tights with dark brown boots, or when the colour is repeated elsewhere in the outfit.
Can you wear socks over tights with ankle boots?
Yes, it's one of the looks of the season: a short sock that peeks out of the boot, over sheer or opaque tights. At Sacai's spring/summer 2027 show in Paris, a black sock above a pointed ankle boot appeared in 27 of 45 looks.
